In Topic 6, we had discussed the BASICS of curriculum design.  Refer to slide 5 of the topic "Content Organisation" and comment about the theory-practice balance.  Is there that balance in the degree programme at your University?

  1. In content-organization, there must be balanced between elements of learning (i.e. balance between skills, attitude, competencies, knowledge(SACK),aspects of developments such as physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual and the balance between theory and practice.
Every degree program must have theory is 70% and practical is 30%.
Yes, there is a balance between theory and practice in our university degree program.

    1. Looking through in the content organization, there are a balanced between elements the program of learning such as skills, attitude, competencies, knowledge (SACK) and also In the inclusion of development eg: as physical, emotional, spiritual and the balance between theory and practice. Normally in every degree program the theory is 70% and practical is 30%. In conclusion, there is balance theory and practice in our university degree program.

    2. Since it is a health science university college, definitely it offers programmes which have balance between elements of learning and aspects of development among the students in order to make sure them able to practice it in their real life. If the students only have the knowledge but unable to practice it correctly with skilful and competencies, they still consider failure in the eye of community because health science programmes need more than their learning. It must develop in the perspectives of physical, emotional, spiritual and intellectual where people will more confident with the management. Moreover, for each health science programmes, there is a body who will control and look after the programmes. Each university or university college needs to fulfil the criteria. If not, the body will not allow them to proceed until they followed the standard and criteria.

  2. Learning does not happen just through experience. Experience has to be ‘processed’ (Reflected upon, related to previous learning and applied to practice) in order for learning to take place. Learning only takes place when learning is put into practice. (Neil Thompson,2000). Theory and practice are vital in Nursing Curriculum. That is why elements of learning and aspects of development are balanced in every degree programs. Skills, Attitude, Competencies, knowledge are grouped under elements of learning and Physical, Emotional, spiritual and intellectual are aspects of development. In my college, theory is 70% and practical is 30%. It is balanced.

    1. I'd like to pick up on the point made by Nages that learning has to be reflected upon, related to previous learning and applied in practice. How are these done in practice at your university? How much of discussion on the learners' practical experience is done? Isit effective?

    2. In nursing programme, we have applied a reflective study and case study during clinical posting in order to make sure they will more understand on the learning objectives. But yet, the students still lack in the critical thinking and initiative in the perspective of health client needs and wants. They still are stereo type thinking where they used the book as reference without related it into the real contextual of environment. For those who understand it clearly, they manage to applied it in their knowledge and skills.
